Death of the modern historian Pierre Goubert

The historian Pierre Goubert died January 16, 2012, at the age of 96. Specialist in seventeenth-century French, Pierre Goubert was born in 1915 in Saumur. He was a pupil of Marc Bloch at ENS de Saint-Cloud, a decisive encounter for his vocation. Mobilized in 1939, he escaped captivity and became a teacher in high school ...


In 1948, he obtained the aggregation of history and began a PhD on the Beauvaisis, culminating in his famous thesis (with Ernest Labrousse as supervisor), Beauvais and Beauvais from 1600 to 1730, major milestone in the historiography French, especially in historical demography.

mazarin_goubert During the 1950s he was a member of the CNRS and director of studies at the EPHE. After going to the University of Paris X Nanterre, he entered the Sorbonne in 1969. He became famous worldwide for its reference publications in modern history. Thus, in 1966, the Louis XIV and twenty million French, regularly reprinted. In 1984 he published with Daniel Roche another classic, The Old Regime and the French, who followed his book The Old Regime.

If it is part of the Annales School, Pierre Goubert is also illustrated in the biography (Mazarin, 1990). He was one of the greatest modern historian of the twentieth century.
